Dr. Isata Kamanda earned her Ph.D. in Plant Breeding from the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement at the University of Ghana, Legon, Accra. She obtained her M.Sc. from Njala University College and her B.Sc. in Crop Science from the same institution.

Dr. Kamanda began her career in 2012 as a Research Officer III at the Sierra Leone Agricultural Research Institute (SLARI), stationed at the Njala Agricultural Research Centre (NARC). In 2016, she was promoted to Research Officer II at the same centre. During her tenure at Njala, she made significant contributions to her field of specialization, achieving the goals set by the institution. Her doctoral thesis was titled “Genetic Improvement of Root Yield and Nutritional Quality of Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) in Sierra Leone.”

In 2019, she was appointed Acting Project Development and Management Officer at SLARI Headquarters. In this role, she successfully managed and led various projects, showcasing her knowledge and experience. Dr. Kamanda has contributed to numerous successful research initiatives both nationally and internationally.

As a member of the Management Committee at SLARI, she has demonstrated strong leadership qualities and a commitment to teamwork, driving success for the institution. Her work has brought significant achievements to both SLARI and the country as a whole, particularly her success with the orange-fleshed sweet potato in Sierra Leone. Dr. Kamanda’s mission as a scientist is to elevate agriculture to greater heights on both national and international levels. She is now the Deputy Director General for Commercialization and Agribusiness Development.
